The simpler body construction significantly reduced production costs, and the SG, with its slender neck profile and small heel where it joined the body, was advertised as having the &#8220;fastest neck in the world&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Although the new guitar was popular,\u00a0<a title=\"Les Paul\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Les_Paul\">Les Paul<\/a>\u00a0strongly disliked it.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gibson_SG#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Problems with the strength of the body and neck made Paul dissatisfied with the new guitar. At the same time, Paul was going through a public divorce from wife and vocalist partner\u00a0<a title=\"Mary Ford\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Ford\">Mary Ford<\/a>, and his popularity was dwindling as music tastes had changed in the early 1960s. Paul asked lifelong friend and former President of Gibson\u00a0<a title=\"Ted McCarty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ted_McCarty\">Ted McCarty<\/a>\u00a0to withhold his $1 royalty per guitar, and Gibson mutually agreed to end the contract.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gibson_SG#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Gibson also honored Les Paul&#8217;s request to remove his name from the guitar.<\/p>\n<p>In the early-to-mid 1960s Gibson&#8217;s parent corporation,\u00a0<a title=\"Chicago Musical Instruments\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago_Musical_Instruments\">Chicago Musical Instruments<\/a>, revived the\u00a0<a title=\"Gibson Kalamazoo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gibson_Kalamazoo\">Kalamazoo<\/a>\u00a0brand name for a short time. Later models of the KG-1 and KG-2 featured a body style similar to the Gibson SG, effectively creating a budget-line model until the brand was dropped in the late 1960s.
